Training Program Overview

The Student Intern Training Program offers training programs to student Interns and Trainees from different training backgrounds in a variety of clinical practice settings. We currently offer programs to  students from undergraduate programs, MSW and MFT programs throughout the Bay Area and elsewhere. Some undergraduate-level internship opportunities, both paid and volunteer, are available. The undergraduate portion of the program is something that we are continuing to develop and expand.

Our mission is to provide an enriched clinical training experience focusing on building clinical and cultural competency for students preparing for careers in mental health. The program provides the Department with training opportunites for our clinical staff as well as a recruitment source of future employees. A recent review of former Interns showed us that more than 75% of former masters-level Interns/Trainees from a five year time capture were currently working for one of our programs, either a county-operated program or one of the many private non-profit agencies that we contract with  to provide mental health services.

The training program includes experience with clients from many cultural and ethnic backgrounds in the following areas:

  • Intake assessment and evaluation

  • Suicide/homicide risk assessment

  • Child/elder/dependent adult abuse reporting

  • vDSM IV differential diagnosis formulation

  • Treatment planning

  • Individual, group, and family therapies (play therapy with children)

  • Case management activities

  • Crisis intervention

  • A nine-month training seminar  program providing over 100 hours of training over the course of the academic year.

  • Access to many additional training seminars through our Intern Training Collaborative

  • Individual supervision

  • Intern group supervision weekly

  • Stipends $5,333-8,000 plus a $500 bilingual differential for graduate students depending upon the number of hours completed. Availability of stipends depends upon funding availability each fiscal year. Stipends for undergraduate level Interns varies depending upon the number of hours.

  • Work-study options; administrative training experiences; Intern group; and additional group supervision at some sites. Our services range from outpatient services to children, adolescents and their families to adults and older adults.

The Department prides itself on it's ongoing commitment to training culturally competent clinicians and providing culturally competent services to our clientele.

Please explore our website and then feel free to contact our Student Intern Program Coordinator, Charley Hodson,  LCSW, for more information and an interview. Our program operates throughout the year. Most students begin in the fall and train for the academic year though other options are available.
